Arco 2017 Speed World Cup
Speed got underway in baking conditions under the Italian sun in Arco. With the season halfway through the favorites were starting to shine through. Iuliia Kaplina seems to have a strong grip in the womens overall ahead of arch rival Anouck Jaubert, while in the mens Reza Alipourshena definitely had the speed but his consistency was leaving the door open, especially for Russian star Slava Deulin who was having a very consistent season.
Come finals, there were no real surprises in the line up with all the usual suspects getting through. It was a tough race for Russian Mariia Krasavina who was knocked out in the round of 16, the only front runner really to suffer. Then, when we got to the final we saw a false start by Iuliia Kaplina, giving Anouck the win and the first glimmer of hope in a tough season against her old rival.
In the mens it was sad to see Libor Hroza go out with a fall in the quarter finals, in what quite possibly was the Czech legends last World Cup. Come the final and Reza was the one to crack, falling from the wall and giving the win to Slava. Not a classic event in the history of Speed competition but one which built intensity for the rest of the season.
