The Circuit Competition Boulderer of the year 2017. Shauna Coxsey
Coming back from injury can be the toughest thing for a competitive athlete. When Shauna Coxsey injured her shoulder during the 2016 Munich World Cup finals, her second major injury after breaking her leg a couple of seasons earlier, questions were asked about whether she would be back at full fitness for 2017.
The fact she also chose to sit out the pre-season events also raised questions. Was Britain’s greatest World Cup climber ready for 2017?
The answer in fact was an emphatic yes! Starting the season superbly with a win in Meiringen, Switzerland, Shauna went on to convincingly take the 2017 Bouldering World Cup overall title. Along the way she only missed the podium once all season, with a fourth placed finish in Japan. Victories in Switzerland, China, The U.S and India securing her the title before the season’s final round in Munich Germany.
This year Shauna stood alone as the dominant force in Bouldering World Cup’s, showing incredible consistency on the way to her second title. Shauna not only showed that she had successfully recovered from injury, she showed improvement over the off season. An level that she will need to maintain with so many strong climbers striving to reach the top step!
