The Circuit Competition Performance of the Year 2017. Colin Duffy
When we look back at the year there were any number of fantastic performances across the competition circuit. But more than any other, one stood out. Deep into Youth Worlds in Innsbruck the audience and competitors alike were flagging. As a group they were experiencing massive competition fatigue.
Youth B finals is often seen as one of the less entertaining finals in a junior program as they are the climbers new to the international circuit, the ones who haven’t gained a fan following yet.
In Innsbruck however, American Colin Duffy won the support of the entire crowd during the Youth B Lead final with an incredible fighting performance that had the crowd cheering as one.
Diminutive in stature, Colin stood much shorter in presentation than some of his peers. The watching crowd could only hope the setters had achieved one of the holy grails of competition climbing, setting a route that split the climbers evenly on ability even with 20cm or more disparities in size.
As Colin surged up the route, dynamic and committed but always in control, the crowd got louder and louder. When he stuck the throw to the top hold his own victory shout was drowned out by that of the audience. We all knew we had witnessed something special!
Colin once told one of the Team USA coaches that when he grew up he wanted to be World Champion. On September the 7th he came of age, making his dream reality!
Well done Colin on winning The Circuit Competition performance of the year!
