The Circuit Female competition climb of 2016, Anak Verhoeven
Anak Verhoeven was out last in the finals in Arco, a technical cruxy route that had undone everyone below her within the first third with the exception of Jain Kim of Korea who had made it through to two thirds height. Anak switched down a gear and smoothly dispatched the crux before fighting to the top. This incredible effort secured the Belgian star the most emphatic victory of the year and the first World Cup gold of her career.
In a category where the moves are often under-set for the top climbers bringing it down to endurance it was great to see a route that actually challenged the skills of the climbers from low on the route. Several climbers had the skills but weren’t expecting the intensity to raise so early and fell victim to the low crux. Anak on the other hand was able to engage, focus and get it done. Awesome to watch!
