The Circuit Top Picks 2017: Janja Garnbret
Best Result: (Bouldering only) 2nd, Innsbruck 2016. Youth A World Champion 2015, 2016
2016 season rank:17
Don’t let her 2016 rank fool you. Janja competed in her first two Boulder World Cups last year and scored a 5th and a 2nd. Oh, and she won four Lead World Cups, took the Lead overall and became lead World Champ. Not bad for a girl who was 17 at the time!
Janja has massive ability, I stand by my belief she is the best climber I’ve ever seen. Her ease of movement and playful manner while climbing can fool you into a false belief that what shes doing isn’t that hard, then you see the same problems destroying some of the best in the world and you’re forced into a reality check.
Janja in her happy place is just about unstoppable, if she gets some momentum going in the series the other girls will be in a world of trouble. However, Janja’s Achilles heel is losing, it’s like she doesn’t understand it and it can dent her confidence. A couple of tough results could really make it spicy for the youngster from Slovenia. Let’s see what happens!
