Vail 2017 Boulder World Cup Men’s Qualifying album
Many of you by now have read Jakob Schubert’s comments on the slab heavy qualifying round from the Vail Bouldering World Cup. I have to say I agree with his sentiment, but it was an unavoidable issue for the Routesetters as the wall was effectively to narrow and slabby on the edges to allow the setters room to set more diverse problems.
This year the organizers opted for a new wall shape that lacked the diversity of angles they’d had the last several years. Add to that the narrow wall requiring a temporary slab to be built behind it and you ended up with one qualifying group having 3 slabs out of 5 climbs and the other group having 2.
Check out our mens qualifying album to see the wall and the problems (as well as the climbers of course) and draw your own conclusions.
